Hampshire Libraries Special Collections Awards 2010

Hampshire Libraries Special Collections Awards

The Special Collections held by Hampshire Libraries are an important part of Hampshire’s cultural heritage and are a unique resource demonstrating the county's historical and geographical links to aviation, military and naval past and present.

How it all works

Phase One

From January to April we are inviting as many people as possible to nominate books, and asking for reviews/comments to be added to these titles.

  • Get involved!
Vote online, fill in the printed leaflet form, or email  library.specialcollections@hants.gov.uk
If you want to write a review (it can be short or long!) please email it to us and we shall include it.

Phase Two

From May to September) the Judging Panel will look at the number of votes per title, at the type of books in each main category (Aviation, Military, Naval) and reduce the list to about 50. The list of the 50 books, with reviews and comments, will be on the website and in a printed leaflet and you will be asked to vote for a top 5 in each main group.

There will be events including author talks, workshops promoting these books, and votes will be canvassed amongst members of the public for a final 5 in each main category.

  • Get involved!
Come along to an author talk, or attend a workshop. These will be held at Aldershot and Farnborough Libraries and at Gosport Discovery Centre, and at some of our Partner venues. Check  What’s On details of events.

Phase 3

October to November will see the judging panel deciding upon the winners - Best Aviation book, Best Military book, Best Naval book and the Award for Overall Winner

  • Get involved!
The Awards Ceremony will be held in November. Anyone who has voted or attended an event will be eligible to come to the ceremony - so once the date and venue are decided, we will notify you.

Twitter, LibraryThing, Facebook

We are also running the project on 3 social networking groups, and you can join any of them to vote, review, comment on the books and the project.

  • Twitter allows you only 140 characters to register a vote, or comment on a book (that was 80!) so you can be very brief

  • LibraryThing will let you write a longer review of your favourite books, or comment on other people’s choices and gives fuller details of the books and the authors

  • Facebook will help link our project with many other groups with similar interests, and reach all over the world, so that Hampshire’s special collections become better known!
