Hampshire Archives and Local Studies

Schools

The needs of younger pupils (years 1- 9) can generally be met from our resource packs, DVDs and online resources supplemented, perhaps, by photocopies of material relating to the school's locality. Learning visits can only be pre-arranged with a definite focus in mind e.g. a local study.

Pre-arranged learning visits can be arranged for post 16 Students (studying history, geography, archaeology and population studies at Advanced, undergraduate or postgraduate level) as well as GCSE and SHP pupils. FE and HE students are also welcome.

Hampshire Archives and Local Studies encourages all students and pupils to become fully-fledged users of archival material, able to work on their own initiative in the public searchroom, applying for and using appropriate user tickets. As a first stage we can offer structured visits (up to a maximum of 24 pupils/students).

Careful planning of learning visits is essential as a basis for later individual use of our collections. A visit must be preceded by a discussion between the teacher and the Archive Education Officer, and all the pupils/students must be well prepared in advance of the visit.

We can schools offer Curriculum Enrichment opportunities in the form of practical half day workshops for small classes of up to 20 pupils. Each half day workshop costs £70 or £140 full day.

Workshop 1 focuses on the Tudors and includes making replica seals of the Tudor monarchs and a Tudor horn book (a Tudor style copy writing book).

We have created a full set of Tudor seal moulds from which to cast plaster seals of the Tudor monarchs. Each seal has two sides. On one side the monarch is seated on their throne, and on the other side they are on horseback, either going into battle or riding in a stately manner.

Workshop 2 looks at paper-making and book-making and includes making hand-made paper and a hand-sewn illuminated manuscript. A display of materials and methods for creating and using different writing materials from papyrus to paper is also used.

Schools could choose to organize the above workshops as part of their school workforce remodeling programme for teachers and support staff rather than pupils.
