Fareham

Horse and Dog, early 1800s
by Hayter Kinch Hayter

Horse and Dog painting

Kinch was a true local artist. He was born in Fareham in 1767 and lived in the town all of his life. His home was on the corner of Trinity Street in the centre of town, and after his death in 1844 he was buried in the graveyard at Holy Trinity Church. His father was a Fareham wheelwright, and the young Hayter was apprenticed in this trade. By 1823 he was working as a professional artist, painting portraits of the local gentry and other families, as well as animal portraits. The date of this horse and dog scene is not known, although the style was popular among members of the gentry in the early to mid 1800s.

Oils on canvas.
