Funding and support

Sport Hampshire & IOW is commited to providing guidance and advice on funding and support to clubs, groups and individuals. These pages contain information on funding opportunities and include details about local and national resources.

In addition, Hampshire County Council and Sport Hampshire & IOW have a number of schemes designed to provide straightforward funding and support for local athletes, coaches, clubs and volunteers in sport.

Listed below are some generic recommendations for funding applications. For more in-depth guidelines, download the External Funding Service application process factsheet

Do's

Don'ts

Read the guidance

Wait until the last minute

Study the funders priorities

Assume knowledge of your project – spell everything out clearly and concisely

Be realistic in terms of time frame and budget

Leave boxes empty unless directed to do so

Get support from relevant partners i.e Local Sports Development Officer, National Governing Body, Sport Hampshire & IOW

Don’t expect that you’ll be able to go back to the funder for more money if you spend more than you originally thought.

Send in all the accompanying documents

Spend any money before you have had official approval and permission to spend.

Get all the appropriate signatures

Send in a generic begging letter

Explore match funding options as soon as possible, not all grants will fund the total cost of the project

Handwrite the application, try to type it if you can. It looks more professional and can be more easily read.

Make sure all your sums add up and cross reference the figures across all the sections of the form.

Get someone to proof read

Keep to the word count.

Make sure you understand all your obligations should you receive funding.

Think about the future, funders will be more open to applications that have taken into account the sustainability of the project after the grant finishes.
