Coaching

Coaching is the lifeblood of sport. Whether you’re a parent looking for an introduction to recreational sport, looking for your child’s first club outside of school sport, hoping to nurture young talent or you are a seasoned, elite athlete – the coach will be central to you/your child’s enjoyment, sporting development and ultimately to success.

High quality coaching describes the kind of coach we all strive to be or be coached by. It doesn’t matter whether you're working with beginners, occasional performers or elite athletes – coaches must be able to demonstrate a commitment to safe, professional and cutting edge coaching practice.
High Quality Coaching is evident when: -
- Participants respect their coach and respect others
- Participants are enthusiastic about attending & having fun
- Participants can see/map their progress and are motivated to succeed
- Participants understand the ‘whats’, 'hows' and ‘whys’ of their sport
The hallmarks of a High Quality Coach are coaches who: -
- actively review their practice
- pursue training and development opportunities (Continuing Professional Development) to continue improving
- adopt an athlete-centred approach (treats all players as individuals)
- views player development as a long term process (LTAD)
Developing the Coaching Workforce
Sport Hampshire & IOW is always looking for new coaches, officials and volunteers to support young people in sport.
We provide a range of support mechanisms to assist new, novice and experienced coaches to achieve their potential as the best coaches their sport can offer. These include money towards NGB awards, Coach Education courses and mentoring programmes.
If you are interested in getting involved in a particular sport, get in touch for more information.
We strongly recommend that all coaches working with children and young people attend Safeguarding & Protecting Children, Equity in Your Coaching, How to Coach Disabled People in Sport and Coach Better Sessions 1 & 2.
If there’s anything else we can do to support your coaching, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
