Sport Unlimited

Sport Unlimited gives "semi–sporty" children, young people and young adults living in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the chance to try new and exciting sports and activities in fun and relaxed environments.

Young people who don’t ordinarily participate in out of school sports activities are encouraged to engage in an extra 1-2 hours a week (minimum 8 weeks) of high quality sport and physical activity. The emphasis is on having a go, getting involved and going along to each session, developing new skills and making friends.

Since 2008 more than 11,500 youngsters across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have been introduced to activities such as cheerleading, street dance, BMX, canoeing, fitness, athletics, korfball and fencing to name a few! Such is the success of Sport Unlimited that two in five young people who have been involved in taster sessions continue to take part – in clubs, youth centres, leisure centres and with their friends.

Sport Unlimited is playing a key role in delivering a lasting participation legacy from London 2012 and the programme has been awarded the Inspire Mark in recognition of the impact it is having on young people.

“Sport Unlimited is going from strength to strength, encouraging hundreds of thousands of young people to try sport,” said the Minister of Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson MP. “One of my top priorities is to ensure that we deliver a sporting legacy from the Olympics and Paralympic Games. This scheme is part of that, inspiring a new generation of children to get out there and take part, no matter what their age or ability.”

With many of the 150 projects receiving funding in 2010/11 still to take place, Sport Unlimited promises to offer youngsters even more exciting opportunities to try something new!

So if you are ‘Semi Sporty’ and interested in getting involved, why not give Sport Unlimited a go.
